Unwanted outcomes related to medications are the greatest cause of loss for psychiatrists. As we emerge from the COVID public health emergency (PHE), the prescription drug abuse epidemic likely will become a priority again for the nation and for the states. Unfortunately, drug overdose deaths increased during the PHE. Even for psychiatrists who have a long history of safe prescribing practices, renewed focus on laws and regulations and the professional liability risks associated with prescribing controlled and non-controlled substances is called for. Discussion will include issues related to informed consent and prescribing for minors.

Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, attendees will be able to:

• Identify ways a psychiatrist might be held liable for the acts of others
• Describe methods for determining patient non-adherence
• Explain steps to improve adherence to treatment recommendations
• Explain the professional liability exposures for improperly releasing as well as improperly withholding patient information
• Respond appropriately to requests for patient information
